Coupang, the South Korean e-commerce giant known for revolutionizing logistics with its rocket delivery service, is now setting its sights on the artificial intelligence (AI) cloud computing market. Equipped with high-performance GPUs and robust data center infrastructure, the company is ramping up its global talent acquisition efforts, aiming to transform into a technology-driven platform company that rivals the likes of Amazon Web Services.
According to industry sources on Sunday, Coupang is offering highly competitive compensation packages - up to $324,000 annually - for top-tier AI and cloud talent based in global tech hubs like Mountain View, California. The positions include options for remote or hybrid work and target roles in AI, big data, cloud infrastructure, and software engineering. This salary level is more than double the U.S. average for developers, signaling Coupang’s commitment to securing elite talent.
“Offering $300,000 with remote flexibility is a bold move, even compared to top-tier U.S. tech firms,” an IT industry insider said.
Coupang is also expanding hiring in India and accelerating the rollout of its AI cloud business., the company unveiled a new logo for “Coupang Intelligent Cloud” (CIC) earlier in July 2025, signaling its official entry into the AI cloud computing space. The service allows clients to store data and software on Coupang’s servers and leverage AI capabilities remotely - a model increasingly adopted across industries.
Although initially used internally and by select startups and research institutions, Coupang says its AI cloud infrastructure has already contributed significantly to enhancing customer experience and boosting revenue for over 230,000 small and medium-sized merchants using its retail platform.
Coupang operates large-scale data centers in the Seoul metropolitan area with extensive power capacity, advanced cooling systems, physical security, and high-performance GPUs - enabling it to manage complex AI workloads with stability and efficiency.
“We are committed to delivering best-in-class AI cloud services backed by cutting-edge GPU servers and ultra-stable infrastructure,” the company said in a statement.
In addition to its commercial expansion, Coupang is bidding to participate in a 1.5 trillion won ($1.1 billion) government project to boost national AI competitiveness. The company applied for Korea’s “GPU Infrastructure Support Program,” a highly competitive public tender also drawing interest from major cloud players like Naver. As part of its proposal, Coupang has pledged to secure 10,000 GPUs to support the project.
The company’s strategic shift toward cloud services mirrors Amazon’s evolution from online retailer to global cloud leader. Coupang is now positioning itself to follow a similar path by combining its retail experience with cutting-edge technology.
The company has already applied AI and machine learning in its core logistics business - predicting product demand, optimizing inventory and delivery, and automating operations at its nationwide network of smart warehouses.
That tech foundation is gaining global recognition. Coupang recently ranked 5th in a “Retail AI Readiness Index” by CB Insights, which evaluated the AI capabilities of the world’s top 20 retailers. The company holds 2,100 AI-related patents as of 2024, a thirteenfold increase from 2019.
