Hyundai Wia Corp, a South Korean manufacturer of large-caliber artillery and aircraft parts, is positioning itself as a key player in the artillery sector as the country’s defense industry continues to rise on the global stage.

The company announced on Thursday that it presented its long-term vision at the Korea Defense Component Material and Equipment Fair 2025 in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, jointly hosted by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and Changwon City.

Known for supplying large-caliber gun barrels for flagship weapons such as the K2 battle tank and K9 self-propelled howitzer, Hyundai Wia is expanding its defense portfolio to meet rising international demand.

As Korea’s only artillery gun barrel manufacturer, the company has produced more than 20,000 barrels since its first mass production of 4.2-inch mortars in 1977.

At the exhibition, Hyundai Wia showcased its proven 120mm and 155mm barrels, while also unveiling development plans for ultra-long-range artillery and next-generation tank weapon systems.

A highlight of its expanded lineup is a lightweight 105mm self-propelled howitzer, optimized for mobility and rapid deployment.

Weighing less than half of conventional systems in its class, the lightweight howitzer features a maximum firing range of 18 km and can be mounted on light tactical vehicles capable of speeds up to 100 km/h.

The system is also designed for aerial transport via large helicopters, increasing its strategic flexibility.

Hyundai Wia plans to build on the global recognition of Korean weapons platforms by investing in research and development for cutting-edge artillery and securing overseas contracts.
