South Korea’s Seoul Semiconductor announced Tuesday that it nabbed another victory in a major European patent case. The Unified Patent Court (UPC) in France ordered an immediate sales ban, product recall, and destruction of products that infringed on Seoul Semiconductor’s core optoelectronic technology.

This is the company’s second major win following its landmark LED sales ban across eight countries in October 2024. The infringing company, Laser Components, is a global distributor of electronic parts whose main markets include the United States, Europe, and Canada. Laser Components was found to have sold products violating Seoul Semiconductor’s WICOP (Wafer Integrated Chip on PCB) technology, a key innovation for micro-LEDs requiring no wires.

WICOP technology is critical for ultra-miniaturized, high-performance products such as micro-LED displays, automotive headlamps, smartphone flashes, and backlights.

Seoul Semiconductor, which has focused exclusively on optical semiconductors for over 30 years, holds more than 18,000 patents and leads the UV LED and LCD backlight sectors globally.
