Samsung Electronics Co.’s latest foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, has been confirmed to be thinner than the Honor Magic V5, which was claimed by the Chinese brand as “the world’s thinnest foldable.”
On Wednesday, IT news outlets including SamMobile reported on findings shared by product leaker UniverseIce, who posted a side-by-side comparison video on social media platform X.
In the video, UniverseIce noted that while Honor claimed the Magic V5 measured 8.8mm when folded—slimmer than the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s official 8.9mm—direct visual comparisons revealed that the Samsung device was actually thinner.
The video demonstrated the subtle difference by placing a card across the two devices and by rolling a ping pong ball between them, which consistently veered toward the Fold 7 side.
The leaker explained that even after switching the devices’ positions to eliminate surface bias, the ping pong ball continued to roll toward the Galaxy Z Fold 7, reinforcing the conclusion.
Supporting measurements also appeared on Reddit.
A user there reported using a micrometer to measure both devices: the Magic V5 came in at 9.417mm when folded and 4.536mm when unfolded, while the Fold 7 measured 8.790mm folded and 4.287mm unfolded—further contradicting Honor’s marketing.
Honor had unveiled the Magic V5 on July 2, a week before Samsung’s official Galaxy Unpacked event, claiming it to be the slimmest foldable smartphone with a folded thickness of 8.8mm and unfolded thickness of 4.1mm. However, it later emerged that the 8.8mm figure applied only to the Ivory White version, which features a plastic back.
Other color variants with metal finishes were thicker at around 9mm.
Honor responded to the controversy by stating that its measurements excluded both the display’s protective film and the camera bump.
SamMobile criticized this explanation, noting that while omitting camera modules from thickness specifications is common, disregarding the display film is highly unusual.
