Coupang Logistics Services (CLS), the logistics arm of e-commerce giant Coupang, announced on Tuesday that it implemented large-scale enclosed cooling zones at its sub-hubs across South Korea to help prevent heat-related illnesses among workers during the summer season.

According to CLS, this is the first time the logistics industry has specifically installed expansive cooling infrastructure to protect workers’ health and safety amid the extreme heat.

To create these enclosed cooling zones, CLS installed curtain barriers to prevent cool air from escaping and mounted ceiling-type system air conditioners in areas where key tasks like package sorting and fresh bag cleaning are concentrated. The company also enhanced the setup with large ceiling fans and other supplementary cooling devices to boost overall effectiveness.

As a result of these efforts, temperatures inside the sub-hubs have dropped to around 20 degrees Celsius, even when outdoor temperatures exceed 30 degrees. CLS added that it plans to expand tailored cooling solutions even further, including attaching large ducts to ceiling air conditioners to distribute cool air more effectively throughout large spaces.
