South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) achieved a significant milestone as it hit a cumulative production of 15,000 units for its flagship marine engine, the ‘HiMSEN.’ The company held a commemorative event at its Ulsan headquarters on Monday, attended by executives, shipowners, overseas shipyard representatives, and classification society officials.

The 15,000th HiMSEN engine, a 4,320 kW-class model, is slated to be installed on a 16,000 TEU container vessel currently under construction at the Yangzijiang Shipyard in Jiangsu, China, for Swiss company MSC.
Introduced by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in August 2000, the HiMSEN engine is a 4-stroke medium-sized engine known for its technological prowess.
Marine engines are considered the core competitiveness of shipbuilders as they are referred to as the “heart of the ship,” and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is the only Korean company that has succeeded in localizing and licensing them.
