LS Electric Co., an electric power equipment maker in South Korea, has launched construction of a 40-megawatt-hour (MWh) long-duration energy storage system (ESS) in Jeju.
According to the company on Thursday, it broke ground for the project to build a large-scale ESS on Wednesday on Jeju Island, which is aimed at resolving oversupply of power in the region.
About 50 guests attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including residents and officials from the Korea Electric Power Corp.
In November 2024, LS Electric formed a consortium with other entities including IGIS Asset Management and Kunhwa. The consortium was selected to carry out the project in Jeju’s Hallim area.
The project is slated for completion and commercial operation by November this year.
LS Electric will handle engineering, procurement, and construction, and be responsible for managing operations for 15 years.
Long-duration ESS, defined by a storage capacity of more than four hours, offers greater operational flexibility compared to short-duration systems and is seen as key to managing variable renewable output.
The initiative comes as Jeju Island faces renewable energy curtailments because of power oversupply.
The new ESS is expected to enhance grid stability and optimize the region’s renewable energy use by storing excess energy produced during the daytime and discharging it during peak evening hours.
