Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled its next flagship smartphone series, the Galaxy S25, on Wednesday. The company boasted that it is currently the device with the most powerful smartphone application processor (AP).

Samsung Electronics held its Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event at the SAP Center in San Jose, the United States, on Wednesday, local time, to showcase the Galaxy S25. The company noted that while 2024’s Galaxy S24 was the first AI phone, the Galaxy S25 marks the true dawn of the AI phone era.

The Galaxy S25 features Samsung’s AI-optimized platform, One UI 7, and incorporates multi-modal AI, capable of processing not just text but also voice, images, and videos. It also allows users to give voice commands or search using images.

At the event, a hands-on experience demonstrated the Galaxy S25’s AI assistant capabilities. When asked, “Search for the latest Golden State Warriors basketball match and add it to my calendar,” for example, the assistant seamlessly performed the tasks step-by-step.

The AI agent is currently integrated into Samsung Electronics’ and Google’s default apps, as well as Spotify and WhatsApp. Samsung plans to expand this functionality to various third-party apps in the future, enabling users to give voice commands to hail a ride or order food.

The personal data engine (PDE), which was also introduced for the first time, analyzes personalized data such as user patterns and preferences to deliver tailored services. The PDE securely stores data on-device through Samsung’s Knox security platform.

One standout feature is Select AI, which works across all screens, with users receiving relevant AI recommendations by drawing on a part of the screen. Selecting a block of text activates writing-related AI features while marking around an image, for instance, suggests image editing options.

Another new feature, the Audio Eraser, allows AI to separate and classify sounds such as voices, background noises, or wind in videos. Users can adjust or remove specific sounds with just a click.

The Galaxy S25 is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset. Compared to its predecessor, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy on the S24 Ultra, its neural processing unit (NPU) performance is improved by 40 percent while CPU and GPU performance are enhanced by 37 percent and 30 percent respectively. Thanks to this robust chip, many AI functions can now operate on-device rather than relying on the cloud.

The S25 lineup is lighter and thinner; the S25 Ultra is 14 grams lighter, the S25 Plus is 6g lighter, and the S25 is 5g lighter, with thickness reduced by 0.4 millimeters across all models. The bezels have also been reduced by 15 percent, resulting in larger displays for all models.

The S25 Ultra features a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens, Corning Gorilla Armor 2 display protection, and a built-in Galaxy S Pen.

Samsung Electronics will begin the global rollout of the Galaxy S25 series, including in South Korea, starting February 7th, 2025. Preorders in Korea will run from January 24th to February 3rd.

“The greatest innovations are a reflection of their users, which is why we evolved Galaxy AI to help everyone interact with their devices more naturally and effortlessly while trusting that their privacy is secured,” said Roh Tae-moon, president and head of mobile experience business at Samsung Electronics. “Galaxy S25 series opens the door to an AI-integrated OS that fundamentally shifts how we use technology and how we live our lives.”
