Dongwon Group said it will begin applying artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to forecast demand for new products after demonstrating the technology’s strong accuracy in predicting consumer behavior via testing. The announcement came during the “Dongwon AI Competition,” which took place on Tuesday at the aT Center in Yangjae, Seoul.
The event was co-hosted with KAIST to promote AI development and nurture creative talent. A total of 669 participants across 135 university and graduate school teams competed, with 10 teams advancing to the finals. The finalists used large language models (LLMs), including ChatGPT, over a two-month period to create consumer profiles based on data such as processed food preferences, ready-to-eat meal popularity, online shopping reviews, and purchase frequency. The models were then used to forecast purchase intentions for Dongwon F&B’s new products, including “Dongwon Mat Cham,” “Richam Omelet Ham,” and “Denmark High Greek Yogurt.” Dongwon said it plans to patent the models developed during the contest.
Chairman Kim Nam-jung emphasized that the group sees practical potential in the technology. He said AI’s demand forecasting had already shown accuracy comparable to actual results, adding that the company could soon use AI in real-world product launches. “This competition showed how AI technologies can transform industrial sites,” Kim noted.
Honorary Chairman Kim Jae-chul also attended the competition, underscoring the importance of long-term talent development in the AI era. He said that “the sea of data indicates the start of a new future in the AI era,” expressing hopes that Korea will become a leader in the global data age. Kim has contributed extensively to nurturing AI talent, including a 54.4 billion won donation to KAIST to establish the Kim Jae-chul Graduate School of AI.
Dongwon has also been expanding its own AI initiatives, with the group launching the “Dongwon CDS Academy” in partnership with Databricks in September 2025 to train employees in data science. The company said it aims to foster 800 in-house data experts by 2026 while continuing to integrate AI solutions across a wide range of business operations.
