Online video sharing platform YouTube will help boost the exports of South Korean culture, according to the company’s chief executive officer Neal Mohan.
In an interview with Maeil Business Newspaper on Wednesday local time, Mohan noted that YouTube has played a major role in helping Korean culture reach the world and ultimately become part of global culture as a global phenomenon. He added that YouTube’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology will be a powerful boost for the expansion of Korean content.
The interview was held in the company’s headquarters in San Bruno, California, to celebrate the platform’s 20th anniversary, and is Mohan’s first interview with Korean media since taking office as CEO in 2023. Maeil Business Newspaper was among 14 media outlets from 11 countries invited to visit YouTube’s headquarters.
YouTube is currently offering an automatic dubbing feature powered by AI that can change the language of a video while preserving the user’s voice and tone. This feature is currently available in eight languages, including English and Spanish, with plans to expand to over 20 languages, including Korean, moving forward.
Mohan said that if AI can translate creator videos into every language, fans around the world will be able to access content more easily. He emphasized that non-English content, such as that from Korea, will spread more easily worldwide, including to English-speaking audiences.
Responding to criticism that YouTube’s algorithm encourages political polarization by only showing users the messages they prefer, the CEO explained that it is not that the algorithm is recommending videos, but rather the videos that are widely watched by audiences get recommended.
He noted that YouTube is a very different platform compared to social media such as X (formerly Twitter) or Meta, which allows for a diversity of opinions to exist.
