South Korea’s fashion industry is seeing a strong demand for heavy outerwear and winter clothing as the unseasonably cold weather continues in January.
According to industry sources on Wednesday, sales of premium outerwear at major department stores rose by triple digits year-on-year in the first 13 days of January.
Lotte Department Store recorded the highest sales growth at 130 percent, followed by Shinsegae at 60.4 percent and Hyundai at 54.6 percent.
The surge in demand for thick heavy outerwear was driven by the ongoing cold wave.
Teton Bros, an outdoor brand under fashion retailer LF Corp., saw a 110 percent increase in heavy outerwear sales from January 6 to 12 compared to the previous week.
Sales for the first 12 days of the month jumped 130 percent from the same period in December and 170 percent year-on-year.
LF’s Hazzys also posted an 80 percent increase in heavy outerwear sales during the same week from the previous week.
The sharp drop in temperatures also boosted online shopping demand.
On LF Mall, sales of 2024 Fall/Winter (FW) jumpers, jackets, and coats from January 1 to 12 rose 20 percent compared to the same period a year ago, while off-season discounted items with lower pricing saw a 45 percent increase.
Sales of winter accessories, such as mufflers and neck warmers, also rose by 40 percent.
Fashion platform Musinsa Co. also saw a rise in winter clothing transactions in January.
According to the platform’s transaction data from January 1 to 12, the transaction value for padded jackets and heavy outerwear increased by 55 percent year-on-year.
The value for the padded/fur shoes category more than tripled as cold-weather footwear, such as UGG boots and padded boots, became a trend this winter.
Padded jackets and long coats also gained high interest during the same period, ranking among the top-selling items.
SPAO’s Basic Puffer and Musinsa Standard’s Daily Puffer Short Padding Jacket Black ranked first and second, respectively, in the monthly outerwear ranking in December 2024.
The Nuptse Puffer Jacket from The North Face is also gaining popularity.
The Men’s 1996 Eco Nuptse Jacket ranked second in the weekly outerwear rankings, surpassing 170,000 monthly views.
Consumers are also opting for fur shoes made of fleece and suede, as well as lightweight padded boots.
Brands showcasing unique fur shoes, such as Rockfish Weatherwear and NONPARKING, along with global winter shoe brands like Hunter and UGG, ranked high on Musinsa’s popular product list.
UGG’s Tasman Slippers and Rockfish Weatherwear’s New Original Winter Fur Mules are particularly popular due to their low-heel, easy-to-wear design.
“Sales of cold weather fashion items, which were sluggish due to a warmer-than-usual winter, are rebounding due to the cold wave in early January,” said a Musinsa official. “Fashion accessories such as fur shoes and scarves, which offer both warmth and style, are also selling well.”
Korean athleisure brand XEXYMIX also saw its outerwear sales grow by 109 percent year-on-year over the three months since October 2024.
In particular, the Novel Down Hyper Goose Long Jumper accounted for over 58 percent of total sales in December alone.
Released in 2024, the product is popular for its goose-down material and above-the-knee length, providing both lightness and mobility.
