South Korea’s HD Hyundai Co. announced on Tuesday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Danish shipping giant A.P. Møller – Mærsk to collaborate on decarbonization technologies for the maritime sector.
The agreement includes plans to pilot autonomous navigation and artificial intelligence-based solutions for energy efficiency on the container ships built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co.
The two companies will test HiNAS, HD Hyundai’s autonomous shipping platform, and its AI-powered decarbonization tool, called OceanWise, in a six-month trial.
They also aim to cooperate on retrofitting ships for decarbonization, such as engine optimization, increased cargo capacity, and dual-fuel propulsion systems.
The firms will assess the potential application of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems developed by HD Hyundai’s hydrogen arm, HD Hydrogen.
Mærsk, the world’s second-largest shipping company by deadweight tonnage, has ordered 19 methanol-powered vessels from HD Hyundai since 2021.
