Doosan Enerbility secured a major project in Saudi Arabia to upgrade an existing oil-fired power plant into an eco-friendly, gas-fired facility.

The South Korean company announced Tuesday that it signed a contract with state-run power company Marafiq to convert the Yanbu 2 power plant during a ceremony in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, on Monday. The deal is valued at about 130 billion won ($90.7 million).

Under the project’s scope, Doosan Enerbility will supply key equipment such as combustors and distributed control systems by 2028 and will oversee commissioning. Once the fuel switch is complete, the Yanbu 2 plant is expected to maintain its existing power generation capacity while cutting carbon emissions by about 25 percent.

Located roughly 350 kilometers north of Jeddah in the Yanbu industrial complex, the Yanbu 2 power plant was completed in 2013 with a capacity of 1,375 megawatts. Doosan Enerbility also participated in the original construction, supplying boilers and steam turbines.

Beyond Saudi Arabia, Doosan Enerbility has been actively carrying out similar fuel-switching projects in countries including Chile and Vietnam.

The company is also expanding cooperation with Candu Energy, a Canadian nuclear energy firm, in the heavy water reactor sector. Doosan Enerbility signed a preferred supplier agreement with Candu Energy in Seoul on Tuesday, allowing it to take a larger role in global heavy water reactor projects involving the design, manufacture, installation, commissioning, and operations.
