Global electric vehicle (EV) sales rose sharply in the first five months of this year, fueling cautious optimism that the EV industry may be emerging from the period of stagnation marked by stalled momentum and waning consumer enthusiasm.
According to the Korea Automobile & Mobility Association (KAMA) on Monday, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from January through May reached 5.02 million units, up 34.5 percent from the same period last year. BEVs now account for 13.7 percent of all new car sales globally.
The rebound in growth comes after years of weak expansion.
BEV sales surged 110.9 percent in 2021 before dropping to 63.9 percent in 2022, 25.6 percent in 2023, and just 12 percent last year.
The latest figures suggest the market may have bottomed out, though analysts warn it is too early to confirm a full turnaround given potential volatility in the second half.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales also rose 31.9 percent year-on-year during the period, totaling 2.72 million units and accounting for 7.4 percent of all new vehicle sales.
China remained the largest EV market, with 3.19 million units sold and a 44.4 percent increase in volume. Europe followed with 952,000 units sold, representing 27.8 percent growth.
Chinese automaker BYD led global BEV sales, delivering 924,760 units from January to May, up 42.6 percent year-on-year. Its market share reached 18.4 percent. In contrast, Tesla saw its sales decline 19 percent to 631,018 units, dropping its market share to 12.6 percent.
Hyundai Motor Group maintained its sixth-place global ranking with 190,206 units sold, up 24.2 percent from the previous year.
