South Korea’s HD Hyundai Co. has formed a strategic partnership with U.S. shipbuilder Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) to jointly build commercial vessels on American soil, expanding its foothold in North America.
The two companies signed an agreement on Friday at ECO’s headquarters in New Orleans, Louisiana, agreeing to collaborate on the construction of dual-fuel LNG container ships and other vessel types.
Present at the signing ceremony were Choi Han-nae, head of the Corporate Planning Division at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, and Dino Chouest, CEO of ECO.
Under the agreement, HD Hyundai will provide ship design, equipment procurement support, and shipbuilding technology, while also supplying some of the ship blocks for production at ECO’s shipyards.
ECO operates five shipyards across the U.S. and is known for its global competitiveness in the offshore support vessel (OSV) sector, with 300 OSVs built and operated in-house.
HD Hyundai and ECO aim to jointly build mid-sized container ships at ECO’s facilities through 2028.
The two companies also plan to expand their cooperation to additional vessel types and strategic areas, including defense-sensitive equipment such as cranes, through continued investment in technological assets.
