South Korea’s SK Group is speeding up its business rebalancing initiatives, integrating its semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) affiliates, in an effort to boost corporate value.
SK ecoplant Co., an engineering company under SK Group, announced on Tuesday that it plans to complete the incorporation of four materials subsidiaries - SK trichem Co., SK resonac Co., SK materials JNC Co., and SK materials performance Co. - by the end of this year.
These companies currently operate under SK materials Co., an in-house company (CIC) of SK Inc.
With this incorporation, SK ecoplant will internalize the supply capabilities for essential materials used in key semiconductor manufacturing processes such as photolithography, etching, deposition, ion implantation, metal wiring, and packaging, while enhancing its supply capacity for materials used in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) deposition processes in display manufacturing.
SK trichem specializes in precursor materials essential for applying thin films to semiconductor wafers, while SK resonac supplies specialty gases used in the etching process to remove unnecessary portions from semiconductor circuit patterns.
SK materials JNC produces blue dopants, a key emissive material for OLEDs, and SK materials performance is a photoresist materials company used in forming semiconductor circuits on wafers and has also localized photo-process cleaning agents for the first time in Korea, which are now in mass production.
These four companies are considered high-performing assets that are not only technologically competitive but also generate stable revenues.
Their combined sales last year reached approximately 350 billion won ($247 million).
In this regard, the incorporation is expected to improve SK ecoplant’s sales and profitability through the internalization of quality assets as well as streamline its portfolio.
SK ecoplant plans to maximize synergy within its semiconductor infrastructure business through this acquisition.
Leveraging its design, procurement, and construction (EPC) capabilities for semiconductor infrastructure - including power, water, roads, and manufacturing plants - the company will further strengthen its portfolio, which includes SK airplus (industrial gases), essencore (semiconductor modules), and SK tes (recycling), by expanding into the semiconductor materials sector.
The transfer of the Pangyo data center (DC), previously operated by SK AX (formerly SK C&C), to SK broadband Co. is also part of efforts to clearly define the roles and responsibilities among SK Group’s information and communication technology (ICT) affiliates across the AI and cloud value chain while resolving redundancies.
SK broadband, which is focusing on data center operations based on its telecom network infrastructure, aims to become Korea’s largest data center operator by securing these infrastructure assets.
