Samsung Electronics Co. has launched a new post-retirement rehiring program targeting employees with three or more children, becoming the first company among South Korea’s top ten conglomerates to adopt such a policy.

The program, introduced earlier this year following labor-management consultations in February, allows employees nearing retirement to apply for contract-based roles in quality control, technical advising, and field training.

The initiative does not extend to former employees but is open to current staff approaching mandatory retirement.

Samsung said the program was designed to address declining birthrates while preserving critical organizational knowledge.

By institutionalizing annual rehiring opportunities, the company also aims to provide long-term career planning options for employees with large families.

“This program supports generational continuity and enhances the company’s ability to pass on high-value technical expertise,” said a Samsung spokesperson.

The company expects the program to expand across other affiliates and possibly the broader private sector.

In sectors such as semiconductors, mobile, and home appliances—where senior engineers possess hard-to-replace skills—retaining experienced staff after retirement could be a practical and productive solution.

Initial employee reactions have been positive, with many expressing interest and submitting inquiries about eligibility and contract conditions.
