South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. announced on Thursday that its quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) TVs have received Real Quantum Dot Display certification from TÜV Rheinland, a testing and certification organization based in Germany.

Quantum dots are nanoscale particles - tens of thousands of times smaller than a human hair - that are capable of precisely expressing colors based on light wavelengths, making them a key material in premium displays.

TÜV Rheinland assessed that Samsung’s QLED TVs meet the specifications for quantum dot displays as defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The IEC defines that a quantum dot display must include quantum dot optical components and a blue light backlight.

The German certification organization also said that its spectral measurements of the certified products showed that the optical spectrum clearly distinguishes between red (R), green (G), and blue (B) wavelengths.

Quantum dots enable accurate and vivid color expression thanks to their narrow wavelengths and high fluorescence, while conventional phosphors may produce multiple spectra from a single color.

The certified series include the Neo QLED 8K (QNF990, QNF950), Neo QLED 4K (QNF90, QNF85, QNF80, QNF70), and QLED 4K (QF8, QF7, QF6).

Samsung Electronics said that this certification officially validates its QLED structure based on international standards, enhancing its competitive edge in the market and strengthening its brand trust.

In addition to this certification, Samsung QLED TVs have been recognized by global certification body SGS for their cadmium-free quantum dot technology, confirming their safety for human health.

“This certification objectively validates that Samsung QLED TVs deliver true quantum dot performance built to international standards,” said Son Tae-yong, executive vice president of Samsung’s Visual Display Business. “We will continue to drive innovation and strengthen consumer trust as we lead the premium TV market.”
