South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co., which has expanded its organic light emitting diode (OLED) TV lineup, is reshaping the industry landscape with an over 100 percent surge in sales in May.
According to industry sources on Wednesday, Samsung’s domestic OLED TV sales surged by approximately 140 percent in May from a year ago.
In particular, ultra-large models of 77 inches and above saw sales more than double year-on-year.
“The trend has evolved from ‘bigger is better’ to ‘bigger and higher resolution is better,’ reflecting growing consumer demand for both size and picture quality,” said an industry source.
Samsung has significantly expanded its OLED TV lineup.
The lineup consisted of 3 series, 5 sizes, and 10 models in 2024, but it has grown to 3 series, 6 sizes, and 14 models this year.
Many attribute the surge in sales to Samsung’s advanced technology.
The company’s unique Glare-Free technology, which minimizes screen reflections even in bright lighting or direct sunlight, enhances viewing immersion.
Coupled with the inherent advantages of OLED panels, this allows for vivid picture quality even in dark scenes - a feature that has been widely praised.
The company’s launch of new products also played a significant role, with the portable Moving Style OLED TV introduced in April being a major driver of the sales increase, sources said.
Samsung’s promotional strategies contributed as well.
The company included OLED TVs in its annual TV promotions for the first time this year.
Customers who trade in older TVs (including other brands) and purchase promotional Samsung OLED models can receive up to 300,000 won ($218.39) in membership points, a benefit that gained attention and boosted purchase conversions through word-of-mouth.
Until now, its industry rival LG Electronics Inc. has led the global OLED TV market and maintained a dominant position in Korea with a market share exceeding 50 percent.
However, Samsung’s rapid sales growth is signaling a potential shift in the Korean OLED TV landscape.
According to market research firm Omdia, Samsung topped the North American OLED TV market in the first quarter of this year with a 45.2 percent market share based on shipments.
