Naver’s newly released open-source lightweight AI models exceeded 150,000 downloads less than a month after their launch, signaling a major milestone for South Korea’s open-source ecosystem.
The “HyperCLOVA X Seed 3B” model, released on Hugging Face on April 24th, 2025, was downloaded over 127,000 times as of Wednesday. Including two smaller variants - Seed 1.5B and Seed 0.5B - the total download count surpassed 150,000.
The 3B model, capable of processing text, images, and video, has gained significant attention. Benchmark tests showed it outperformed similar-sized global models such as Alibaba’s Qwen2.5 3B and Google’s Gemma3 4B in Korean language tasks.
The response is particularly encouraging given that, few Korean open-source models have drawn significant attention in the global AI community aside from LG AI Research’s “EXAONE” series. Industry experts say Naver’s performance represents a meaningful achievement in a market traditionally dominated by U.S. and Chinese models.
Naver’s performance rivals or surpasses global competitors. As a comparison, Microsoft’s BitNet b1.58 2B4T recorded around 80,000 downloads over the past month while Alibaba’s Qwen3 models ranged from 200,000 to 500,000 downloads depending on size.
Other Korean companies, including Kakao, have also joined the race in 2025 with the February release of its lightweight “Kanana Nano 2.1B.”
