South Korean shipper HMM Co. said on Monday that it ranked the top among global shipping companies in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance by Dutch rating agency Sustainalytics.
Sustainalytics, a subsidiary of U.S. investment research firm Morningstar, Inc., evaluates ESG risks across seven categories including corporate governance, carbon emissions, safety, human capital, ethical conduct, and stakeholder relations. Companies are scored and grouped into five risk levels, with lower scores indicating better performance. Global institutional investors use the results to guide ESG-focused investment decisions.
HMM retained its top position with an ESG risk score of 13.6 in the latest evaluation, up from 15.4 in 2023.
The company was rated highly across all criteria, with notable gains in the environmental and governance categories. It particularly achieved significant evaluation improvements in the Environment (E) and Corporate Governance (G) categories, including strengthening the establishment and management of air pollutant reduction targets, analyzing and externally disclosing climate-related financial impacts, and increasing the proportion of external directors, in 2025.
An HMM official said, “We will take a leap forward as a global top-tier shipping company based on the implementation of the 2030 mid- to long-term strategy and strengthening ESG management.”
