Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., an electronic component manufacturer under South Korea’s Samsung Group, is accelerating its shift from a smartphone component supplier to a specialist in automotive electronics.
According to multiple industry sources on Tuesday, Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ core business involves multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs).
MLCCs are key components in electronic circuits that help regulate the flow of current to ensure stability.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has been shifting its focus from MLCCs used in smartphones and home appliances to a product lineup specialized for the automotive electronics sector, which demands high heat resistance, high voltage tolerance, and high reliability.
Sales of automotive MLCCs surpassed 700 billion won in 2023 and reached about 970 billion won in 2024.
This year sales are projected to exceed 1 trillion won for the first time.
The shift is being led by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chang Duck-hyun who has been leading the company since 2022.
Chang’s technology-focused leadership is considered to be playing a key role in the shift. He is known for his background in both memory and non-memory divisions at Samsung Electronics Co.
“Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) is at the center of automotive electronics growth,” Chang said recently. “We will aim to achieve 2 trillion won in sales from the automotive electronics sector alone by 2025.”
Samsung Electro-Mechanics operates its Busan plant as a dedicated production base for automotive MLCCs. It has also established automotive production facilities in Tianjin, China, to meet global demand.
