Samsung Electronics Co. is once again aiming to secure a leading position in the global smartphone market with its next-generation flagship smartphone, the ‘Galaxy S25’ series.
The South Korean tech giant plans to widen the gap with competitors such as Apple Inc. and Xiaomi Inc. with a “value-for-money” strategy that involves equipping the device with the latest application processor (AP) and enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities while maintaining prices at the same level as the previous model.
According to sources from the telecommunications industry on Wednesday, the prices of the Galaxy S25 series will remain the same across all its lineups as the previous models.
Based on the 256 gigabytes (GB) model, the Galaxy S25 will be priced at 1,155,000 won ($804.06), the S25 Plus at 1,353,000 won, and the S25 Ultra at 1,698,400 won. The S25 Ultra “Titanium Jet Black” color model, with 16GB of memory and 1 terabyte (TB) of storage, will be available exclusively on Samsung.com with a price tag of 2,249,500 won, sources said.
The global smartphone market is currently dominated by Samsung and Apple, but Chinese companies, including Xiaomi, are rapidly expanding their market presence.
According to recent data from market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung Electronics ranked first in terms of annual smartphone shipments in 2024 with a 19 percent market share. Apple came in second with 18 percent, followed by Xiaomi with 14 percent and Oppo Electronics Corp. with 8 percent.
Industry sources see Samsung’s decision to equip the Galaxy S25 with the most powerful AI specifications in its history while freezing prices as a strategic move to prepare for potential downturns in smartphone consumption amid the ongoing global economic slowdown.
Even amid challenging market conditions, price competitiveness could serve as both a driving force and a catalyst for increasing sales.
“Samsung Electronics is expected to leverage the Galaxy S25 to widen the gap with Apple in the first half of 2025,” an industry insider said. “With Xiaomi recently entering the domestic market and engaging in price competition within the premium smartphone segment, Samsung’s price freeze seems to take these market conditions into account.”
Market insiders also predict that the Galaxy S25 series will achieve the highest sales volume in the history of the S series in nine years in 2025, thanks to its improved AI features and frozen prices. KB Securities Co. recently estimated that the Galaxy S25 series will sell 37 million units in 2025, a 6 percent increase compared to the previous year.
