Tailim Packaging Co., South Korea’s top corrugated box manufacturer, is gaining attention for its eco-friendly innovations, backed by the industry’s only dedicated cardboard research lab.

Maeil Business Newspaper visited its main plant in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, on May 20, where it produces an average of 1 million square meters of corrugated boxes daily.

Using thin linerboard fed through a machine, multiple layers are bonded, shaped, printed, and assembled into boxes for major clients like Nongshim and Ottogi.

The company, founded in 1976, recently won the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award at the 2025 Korea Packaging Awards for a high-strength, lightweight cardboard solution.

By using specially reinforced linerboard, the new product reduces paper use by up to 20 percent while increasing strength by more than 20 percent—allowing a shift from five-layer double-wall boxes to three-layer single-wall models.

Senior researcher Jang Jung-won said the development of a new flute structure helped enhance durability without increasing bulk.

“It improves storage efficiency while maintaining strength,” he said.

Another standout is the Teco Box, a cardboard thermal box launched last year for fresh food delivery. It retains temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius for 21 hours—almost matching Styrofoam’s 21 hours and 20 minutes—but requires only half the storage space.

Tailim’s R&D strength comes from its integrated research lab with Tailim Paper, which handles product and process development.

“We cover everything from linerboard design to structural testing and box production,” Jang noted.

“We will continue to develop sustainable products that balance cost-efficiency and environmental value,” said Jeong Woo-chul, manager at Tailim Packaging‘s Siwha plant.
