South Korea’s top three battery makers will showcase their latest battery innovations at the country’s largest battery exhibition, InterBattery 2025, as they work to strengthen their competitiveness and overcome the recent stagnation in demand.
According to sources from the battery industry on Sunday, LG Energy Solution Ltd., Samsung SDI Co., and SK on Co. will unveil their latest products, which were developed with a focus on innovation, at InterBattery 2025. The event will take place at COEX in southern Seoul from March 5th to 7th, 2025.
LG Energy Solution, which plans to set up the largest exhibition space among the participating companies, will unveil its entire lineup of 46-series cylindrical batteries for the first time at the event.
The 46-series refers to cylindrical batteries with a diameter of 46 millimeters, a next-generation battery that offers at least five times the energy density and output compared to the existing 21-series (21mm diameter) cylindrical batteries.
The new product is designed to maximize performance and enhance safety in cylindrical batteries.
Also on display will be a solar mobility vehicle from U.S. solar electric vehicle startup Aptera Motors Corp., which will be powered by LG Energy Solution batteries.
For its part, Samsung SDI will introduce its No-Thermal Propagation (No-TP) technology, emphasizing advanced safety features amid growing concerns over battery fires.
No-TP technology, for which the company recently completed a review for commercialization, physically prevents heat from spreading between battery cells by using specialized safety materials installed between them.
Samsung SDI will also provide an update on its all-solid-state battery (ASB) development. The company aims to commercialize it by 2027, and supplied samples to multiple customers for evaluation at the end of 2024.
SK on will highlight its diversified battery portfolio, showcasing all three major battery form factors: pouch-type, prismatic, and cylindrical batteries.
By demonstrating a wide range of form factors and material technologies, the company aims to highlight its business expansion potential. It will also reveal a prototype of its self-developed cylindrical battery for the first time after completing a cylindrical battery pilot line in the second half of 2024 to accelerate its research and development (R&D) efforts. The company will also introduce its high-voltage mid-nickel battery, which has been gaining attention.
Chinese battery giant BYD Co., which has started selling electric vehicles in Korea, will also participate in the exhibition for the first time, setting the stage for intense competition between Korean and Chinese battery companies.
For its part, Israeli ultra-fast battery charging technology company StoreDot Ltd. is expected to announce the establishment of a joint venture (JV) to build a production plant in Korea.
