A personalized sleep guidance algorithm developed by Professor Kim Jae-kyoung’s team from the Department of Math Sciences at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) is now being offered worldwide via Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy Watch 8.
This algorithm analyzes users’ sleep patterns to recommend the optimal bedtime window, helping them establish consistent sleep habits and recover from daily fatigue.
Kim is also the Chief Investigator of the Biomedical Mathematics Group at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS).
This technology is based on mathematical modeling and circadian rhythm theory. It considers both sleep pressure and biological clock by analyzing past sleep data.
Unlike simple recommendations for sleep duration, the algorithm offers a clear and actionable “timeframe” tailored to each user - “It is best if you go to bed between 11:10 p.m. and 11:40 p.m.,” for example.
Conventional smartwatch sleep features mostly focus on analyzing past sleep patterns - such as many hours a person slept the night before. In contrast, this newly developed sleep guidance algorithm stands out by helping to design users’ future sleep.
By analyzing their past sleep patterns, it assesses accumulated sleep pressure and circadian rhythm status to suggest the ideal bedtime for waking up refreshed the next day.
At the world’s largest sleep conference, SLEEP 2025, which took place in the United States in June 2025, Kim’s presentation on the algorithm was selected as one of the event’s Hot Topics.
