South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co. overtook Japan’s Honda Motor Co. to become the fourth-largest automobile manufacturer in Indonesia by production volume, data from an auto industry organization in Jakarta showed on Monday.
Hyundai Motor produced approximately 29,600 vehicles in Indonesia from January to May 2025, accounting for a 6.4 percent share of the country’s total vehicle production, according to Gabungan Industri Kendaraan Bermotor Indonesia. The Korean automaker trails Toyota Motor Corp., Mitsubishi, and Daihatsu Motor Co., but outpaced Suzuki Motor Corp. and Honda Motor.
Hyundai Motor’s rise comes as the company strengthens its Indonesian operations as an export base for Southeast Asia. Its Indonesian plant, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI), began operations in late 2021 following construction that started in 2019. The facility has an annual production capacity of 150,000 units.
The automaker said roughly 67 percent of its production in Indonesia during the first five months of 2025 was exports, including 16,492 units of the CRETA and 3,946 units of the Stargaze, a compact multi-purpose vehicle. Both are tailored for local markets.
Despite the increase in output and exports, Hyundai Motor’s local sales in Jakarta remain under pressure as competition from low-cost Chinese electric vehicles accelerates. The automaker ranked seventh in Indonesian market sales during the first five months of the year with a 3.2 percent share.
